Not having had the intestinal fortitude to watch the GOP convention, I can only theorize that the phallic red and blue balloons are in fact "thundersticks", plastic devices which make an irritating racket when clacked together: introduced to the public consciousness, it grieves me to say, during the 2002 World Series between the Anaheim Angels and (my) San Francisco Giants. Oy, the shame.
